  • Electronic registration for voters in Papua New Guinea planned for next election

    The Papua New Guinea Government is to establish a biometric registration system of all citizens ahead the next scheduled elections in 2017.

    The NBC reposts the Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Charles Abel, saying an electronic biometric ID system will create an accurate database, from which the electoral roll can be generated.

    Mr Abel says this will also help other statistical collection, including the national census.

  • Papua New Guinea: Govt intends to build super cyber highway

    Information and Communication Minister Patrick Tammur announced last Friday that Telikom will operate a single international gateway and retain a fixed-lined service under its general carrier licence, according to the national ICT policy.

    Mr Tammur said Telikom, under the new arrangement, would be transformed in preparation for open competition to commence under phase two of the national policy.

  • Papua New Guinea's government flags election delay

    Papua New Guinea's government is contemplating delaying the elections due in June by up to six months, after it was revealed the electoral roll was incomplete.

    Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah also flagged the six-month delay so the government could put in place an Indian-built biometric voting system to ensure elections are free and fair.

    The comments come after it was revealed in parliament last week the electoral roll was only 60 per cent complete with just four months to go until polling day.

    The Government, through the Ministry of Information and Technology, has embarked on key policy initiatives for ICT sector to focus on digital transformation.

    Secretary of ICT Department Steven Matainaho, representing his minister Timothy Masiu, said that under the theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day “Accelerating Digital Transformation in Challenging Times”, ICT is a very unique tool to PNG.

    Tonga’s Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni says it’s significant for the Ministry of Revenue and Customs to work collaboratively with related stakeholders to collect information to protect our borders.

    He made the statement during Thursday’s program to mark World Customs Day with the theme “Data Analysis for effective border management.“

    The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board (UNMEB) unveiled the online student registration system (OSRS) with a target of minimizing excess and multiple enrolment and registration, cost savings for training institutions and closer monitoring of training institutions.

    The health sector is looking to tighten training of workers as way of entrenching professionalism and quality of service.

    On Thursday, the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board (UNMEB) unveiled the online student registration system (OSRS) with a target of minimizing excess and multiple enrolment and registration, cost savings for training institutions and closer monitoring of training institutions.
