Bahrain: Driving licences via the Internet soon

People in Bahrain will be able to renew their driving licences, register their cars or pay traffic fines via the Internet by the end of the year.

They will also be able to register as unemployed or renew their Central Population Register (CPR) cards online.

The five new electronic services will be the first phase of the expansion of e-government, to speed up public services, says Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Central Informatics Organisation president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa.

Bahrain: Public services on the fast track

Waiting time for some public services has been slashed from hours to minutes thanks to the new electronic government network.

People will be able use the Internet by the end of the year to renew their driving licences, register their vehicles, pay traffic fines, renew their Central Population Register (CPR) cards or register as unemployed.

It is all part of the expansion of e-government to speed up public services, says Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) president Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalla Al Khalifa.

UAE: Steering Committee reviews progress of e-Government projects

The UAE e-Government steering committee, chaired by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Khalfan bin Khirbash, UAE Minister of State for Finance and Industry, recently discussed the current progress made in the e-Government project and reviewed the 2006 plan for this major initiative.

The meeting focused on some foundation projects such as e-Portal, Messaging, and also discussed ongoing e-Projects, such as the Human Resources Management System (e-HRMS), the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries e-Government implementation plan and the Financial Management Information System (e-FIMS).

Tallinn - Staatspräsident Arnold Rüütel ist kein Freund der Online-Wahlen. Er betrachtet sie als einen Verstoß gegen die Wahlgleichheit und verweigerte seine Unterschrift unter das betreffende Gesetz. Durch die Möglichkeit zur Stimmänderung seien die Nicht-Computer-Wähler den Interntetnutzern nicht mehr gleichgestellt. Das Verfassungsgericht müsse entscheiden, meinte der 77-Jährige. Die Richter in Tallinn aber stimmten ihm nicht zu.
