Last week, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will launch an online portal consolidating its other veteran-related websites, FierceHealthIT reports (Dvorak, FierceHealthIT, 9/9).

Portal Details

During a speech to the industry and government group ACT-IAC, VA's Chief Veterans Experience Officer Tom Allin said the new portal -- called Vets.gov -- will aim to incorporate VA's more than 1,000 websites into a centralized hub to streamline users' access to the department's various services.

Currently, veterans looking to apply for VA benefits must go to eBenefits.gov. Once they are enrolled and want to access their health care information and appointments they must use a different website, My HealtheVet.

Allin said the websites can be difficult to navigate. He noted that Vets.gov will serve as a "harbor" to take in information from the VA's various sites.

Eventually, the portal will serve as an all-inclusive resource for users to perform services such as:

  • Adding dependents;
  • Checking on claims;
  • Changing addresses; and
  • Signing up for education benefits (Kopp, Federal News Radio, 9/4).

Allin said the Vets.gov portal will go live on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. However, it will take about one year for the site to be fully operational (FierceHealthIT, 9/9). VA is still in the process of developing a single secure sign-on system for users (Ravindranath, Nextgov, 9/3).

According to Federal News Radio, the portal is part of a larger effort to simplify VA's digital services, including the creation of a:

  • Complete client database; and
  • National call center (Federal News Radio, 9/4).

During his speech, Allin also expressed concern that VA did not have enough integrated data on the veterans who use its services.

He said VA's at least 225 health system databases "don't talk to each other," adding, "They have different data rules, and so we can't tell you who is actually using VA today among our veterans."

Allin said VA must improve its customer data collection efforts, including gathering veterans':

  • Contact information;
  • Data on use of VA services;
  • Demographics; and
  • Military records (Nextgov, 9/3).
