What do tourist attractions like the Buffalo Herd Overlook, residential developments ranging from the cabin era to modern developments, “dead-man’s curve,” and transmitting equipment for most of Denver’s television and radio stations have in common? They rely on the services of Foothills Fire Protection District (FFPD) in Golden, Colorado. FFPD’s mission is to keep a wide range of entities safe, and it’s increasingly relying on its website to keep constituents informed. “We’ve always focused on being transparent about our activities so that residents can be in-the-know about everything happening in our busy district,” says Fire Chief Brian Zoril. “Our residents want easy and quick access to online information.”

Volunteers Doug Kalish and Nancy Southorn were charged with taking FFPD’s online presence to the next level. “We’re a small, rural fire department with limited resources. Information Technology is not what we do,” explains Kalish. “By partnering with Colorado Interactive (CI) and the Statewide Internet Portal Authority (SIPA), we have created an infrastructure to better serve our citizens. We’ve upped our game.” In addition to a new technology platform, the site incorporates modern design elements, payment processing, and event scheduling.

CI provides digital government services to state agencies and local governments through a contract with SIPA — the official internet portal connecting the public with Colorado governments. The partnership’s mission allows government leaders to focus on delivering on-demand, digital government solutions without requests for proposals or the use of tax appropriations. The CI/SIPA partnership has benefitted over 60 special districts in Colorado.

FFPD reoriented its website to focus on the user’s experience and make it easier to find useful information such as the FFPD’s ISO rating for insurance purposes, restrictions on burning items, how to secure permits, and fire mitigation information. The website is now mobile-friendly and includes an events calendar as well as a dynamic fire restrictions map that indicates areas with fire restrictions.

“Foothills Fire Protection District is one of the growing number of first responders answering citizens’ demands for comprehensive online information,” says CI’s President and General Manager, Fred Sargeson. “Their website is a fine example of providing the public with easy access to critical information regardless of the technology being used to view it.” Special districts in need of free website hosting and development through the Colorado.gov web portal, should start with SIPA.
