Smart cities that want to enhance traffic management, air quality, and city planning will depend on interoperable IoT. City networks are evolving gradually, however, the networks do not work as efficiently as expected.

As connectedness between smart cities grows, the impact of attacks could prove to be catastrophic. The Securing Smart Cities initiatives seek to increase collaboration with cities, companies, governments, individuals, and nonprofit enterprises globally to defend against cyberattacks.

The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will introduce risks and advantages for smart cities. Here are three major technology trends in smart cities:

  • Higher Interoperability

Smart cities that want to enhance traffic management, air quality, and city planning will depend on interoperable IoT. City networks are evolving gradually, however, the networks do not work as efficiently as expected.

Cities face the issue of incorporating older data into cloud services, bringing in mobility, waste management, air pollution, e-health solutions, and many more with continuous pressure on budgets.

  • Surveillance Tech

There will be a major retaliation against smart city technology on the grounds of terrorism or threats of a crime if citizens believe a surveillance culture is introduced

  • Legal Disputes Hinder 5G Rollout

5G technology is faster than 4G, has broader data bandwidth and lower latency, which positively influences the digital experience. Although there has been some progress in Asia, parts of the U.S. and European cities have been slow. The U.S. Federal Communications Communication (FCC) tried to boost local city adoption, speeding up approval times and limiting the fees cities charge telecom companies to install small 5G cells on their lamp-posts, traffic signals, and others.
