The state government is considering establishing a new portfolio in its state executive councillor line-up to handle digital transformation.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said this would enable the state government to overcome digital-linked challenges while serving as an infrastructure platform.

He said state secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus was expected to present a paper on the proposal at the upcoming state executive councillor meeting.

“We have discussed it for some time and have decided to present a paper on it. We hope Penang will be on the right track and is able to progress in the future,” he told a press conference today.

“Since it is an important matter, it was proposed for me to lead the portfolio while the adviser will be chosen from among the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts.

“Our industries are keeping pace with Industry 4.0 Revolution, which uses technology to improve productivity.

“The state government believes this new portfolio will provide more opportunity for young entrepreneurs to expand their business networks.”

The state government administration led by the chief minister is assisted by two deputies and eight committee chairmen.

Land affairs, land development, transport and information are in the chief minister’s portfolio.
