One of Asia’s first smart city Proof of Concept is set to be launched in the Cyberjaya area in Malaysia this February.

The concept will be launched by technology company NTT Group in partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the US City of Las Vegas and Telephone Corporation.

The concept has been developed as part of the "Research on Smart City Model for Solving Social Problems in Malaysia" project designed to help Malaysia to address critical challenges around water, energy, sanitation, transportation, climate change etc.

To address the challenges some smart city technologies will be explored.

For instance, a 5G network deployed in Cyberjava by Malaysia’s first OpenLab will be used for data telemetry between various applications and sensors.

For example, the 5G network will be used to transmit data from cameras to be installed at intersections with the highest traffic volume in Cyberjaya. This will allow officials to analyse traffic volume and vehicle information to reduce traffic congestion, detect stolen vehicles and support the creation of businesses in the neighbourhood.

NTT will be responsible for overall project supervision and coordination among group companies.

InfoCom Research will be responsible for the implementation of surveys, preparing reports, and support of proposal to stakeholders.

NTT Data will provide support for deployment and technical of smart city solutions. Is successful, the Proof of Concept will be promoted for the deployment of smart city solutions to in other cities in Malaysia, as well as to ASEAN countries, with the aim of improving people's living conditions, improving urban sustainability and realising a smart society
