Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin says his ministry will be using mobile application to inform the public on traffic management, public transportation and waste collection services.

He added that his ministry will also be implementing the smart traffic system to regulate traffic flow in the state, particularly in Kuching and here.

“Smart Traffic system will adapt the timer according to the number of vehicles on the road waiting at the traffic junction. We strongly believe that this system which will be implemented in Miri will bring more convenience to roads experiencing heavy traffic flow during peak hours,” said Lee in his speech at the Miri Mobile Phone Dealers Association’s annual dinner Sunday.

He said transforming Miri into a smart city will involve making available a lot of data and information via mobile application.

“We are in the midst of developing the system which we hope could cover other services. For now data on schedule of public transportation’s availability and waste collection services would be a priority for the public.

“If a mobile application can update the people every day, at least half of our mission of turning Miri into a successful smart city would be achieved.”

As the mobile phone retailing is an increasingly challenging industry, Lee suggested that the association provide professional courses relating to the mobile application.

“It is never too late to learn something new about your own industry. More importantly, learn to share your knowledge and you’ll be surprised with what you’ll get from sharing,” said Lee.

Lee pledged a grant of RM5, 000 for the association’s annual events.
