To ensure that grants disbursed by it reach the needy, the state government will initiate biometric records of all NGO run orphanages, in addition to the ones run by the state. For the same, the government has decided to call for a meeting of all the respective members of the Legislative Council (LC) and experts, to discuss the condition of orphanages in Maharashtra.

In response to a query brought up during question hour in the LC, Vidya Thakur, minister of state for women and child welfare said that the state didn't have records of the numbers of children in NGO run orphanages, despite the state having disbursed the monthly grant to them.

The question raised was about the condition of orphans in the state and the government's plans about their rehabilitation.

Explaining how the records will be beneficial, Thakur said: "In future, if we want to come up with any schemes, these records will help (the government). Also, while the state gives Rs950 per child to the NGO run orphanages, the remaining financial burden is borne by the NGOs by way of donations and financial assistance from benefactors."

There are 42 state run children homes and 1,100 NGO run homes for orphans, which are aided by the state.

Chairman of the LC, Ramraje Nimbalkar directed the minister to call for a special meeting and involve all interested members who would like to make suggestions regarding orphanages; Thakur responded in the affirmative.
