When the entire country is marching towards e-governance under 'Digital India' programme initiated by the union government, judiciary, particularly family courts should also update themselves utilising such initiatives, specifically in respect of disbursement of alimony, Justice RMT Teekaa Raman insisted.

Highlighting the need to abolish age-old procedures like moving a cheque petition to claim the maintenance amount, which is the only source of livelihood for a deserted wife, the judge set out procedures to be adopted by all family courts in the state to digitalise the process.

Since such payments through digital mode was not covered under the e-court project, another initiative to digitalise the entire court proceedings, the judge directed the registrar (judicial) to place the order before the e-court committee for getting administrative sanction to family courts to go digital.

The judge made the observations while partly allowing a plea moved by a Salem-based woman seeking to enhance her maintenance to Rs 1 lakh, to be paid by her husband working in Canada earning Rs 3 lakh a month.

The court revised the maintenance to Rs 50,000 from Rs 10,000 and directed that enhancement shall be calculated from the date of filing the maintenance plea.

Before parting, Raman once again made it clear that all the family courts in the state are required to adopt digital mode for disbursement of the award amount to enhance the timely justice delivery system.
