Their posts may not be quite as high and mighty as those IPS officers aspire to, but grade-II police constables, grade-II jail warders and firemen will soon be firmly within the clasp of the state's ongoing embrace of e-governance: They will have to register online for appointment by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.

Senior police officers said the move to take TNUSRB online - with an internet registration process for aspirants to begin with - is a first step toward making the recruitment system more transparent.

"We have introduced registration on the board's portal," an officer said. "Procedures like written examinations, physical tests, verification of certificates and interviews will still be done manually, at least for now."

The board will soon open online registrations to recruit 15,711 personnel to constabulary posts.

TNUSRB made something of a false start when it tried to go online in 2015 while selecting sub-inspectors and quickly fell back to manual mode. But officers are most confident this time around. "We have held tests to see if we can move online permanently," a senior officer said. "A private software firm is working round the clock to help us fix technical glitches and ensure that the online facility is complaint-free."

The officer said uniformed services recruitment boards in other states went online years ago. "It's time to catch up," he said.

"We have simplified all the steps required to register online," he said. "Candidates will not require advanced computer skills to apply. They will just have to ensure that all relevant documents are in a prescribed format, such as JPEG [the widely used file format for digital images], and are within a prescribed size limit - between 20kb and 100kb."

"Once candidates enter their details on the portal, they'll only have to upload certificates required for particular posts," the officer said. "A one-time registration will allow them to save and update their information. A candidate can then apply during any future recruitment."

Apart from grade-II constables, firemen and jail warders, the board also recruits sub-inspectors of police (fingerprint, technical, law and order and armed reserve or special police) and personnel for the special police youth brigade.
