The Trichy Corporation on Sunday launched preliminary work for riverfront development on a section of the Uyyakondan canal banks here.
The civic body -- through a Namakkal based construction agency -- will provide recreational amenities in around 2.6km stretch of the total 8.7km length of the irrigation canal in city limits.
The amenities to be established on the Uyyakondan banks are expected to generate a revenue of Rs 9.72 lakh to the civic body. As the mandatory administrative and technical sanctions from smart city committees were obtained in September 2018, the Trichy Corporation floated a tender and identified PST Engineering Construction as executing firm of the riverfront development project work.
The project with a maximum two-year duration will install three public parks and raise retaining wall along a portion of the Uyyakondan bank near the Chettipalam bridge and PWD’s aquaduct.
Bathing ghats, stone benches, new roads, and pavements were among the other parameters to be included, covering the northern and southern banks of the canal.
Toilets and parking facility for the visitors will also be provided as a part of the riverfront development project taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 17.56 crore under smart cities mission.
