Chief Minister Nephiu Rio today informed that Kohima was selected as one of the 100 smart cities on September 20, 2016 and implementation of projects have begun in full swing.

Currently Kohima is ranked 1st among the 10 North East Smart Cities.

Under this project, along with the smart cities in the country the “100 days Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation” was launched with special focus on awareness creation on plastic pollution and waste management with special emphasis on waste segregation and moving towards the practice of Zero Waste.

Rio said this while addressing a statewide mass Shramdaan on plastic waste of Swachhata Hi Seva – (Cleanliness Is Service) 2019 and the state level programme for Kohima Smart City Mission; Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban); Pradhaan Mantri Awas Yojana- Housing for all (Urban) here at the NBCC Convention Hall.

Also speaking on the occasion, urban development and municipal affairs advisor Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire said that under Kohima Smart City, so far, 10 projects amounting to Rs 257.91 crore are in progress and 5 projects under DPR preparation stage, out of which one project, i.e. Construction of Kohima Smart City & KMC office is expected to be completed by mid-October.

He said that preliminary works for installation of the prestigious ICCC (Integrated Command & Control Centre) Project is underway and at least one track of the project is expected to go live on December 1.

Under the "100 days Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation" Kohima Smart City in collaboration with the Green Team Kohima has taken awareness programme on Plastic Pollution and Waste Management to 12 Government Schools and 1 Private School.

It also initiated Eco friendly activities with 7 Colleges. 34 private Schools were also covered in an Awareness Rally in Collaboration with All Nagaland Private Schools Association, Kohima Unit under the theme, "My Waste, My Responsibility."

Dr Kire said Kohima Smart City has also held consultations with all apex civil societies including the business community, Hotels & Restaurants and the Taxi & Mini Bus Unions.

Extensive awareness programmes were conducted for all the 19 wards where trainings were given to the Ward Youths to disseminate Waste Segregation practices and monitor their respective Wards.

Dr Kire said that Green Team is also penetrating all the wards and conducting hands on waste segregation by following the garbage trucks to all colonies and collection points.

He said that the Kohima Smart City has also issued over 900 No Parking" Signposts with anti Plastic slogans to the wards to tackle parking and congestion issues in the wards.

Further, in collaboration with the Kohima Village Students Union, drainage nets and Sieves have been installed in Dzuvuru River as an initiative to save Kohima Rivers.

100 Smart City Slogan Signposts have also been put up along the main road on Kohima Town towards creating awareness on Environmental issues, Dr. Kire said.

Further, in a move towards discouraging single use plastic bags, cloth bags are being distributed to all the Tax Paying Households within Kohima municipality.

Cleanliness drives have been carried out every Saturday covering all the wards during the 100 days and Tree plantation was also carried out with the All Nagaland Taxi Association at the Solid Waste Management site.

The Green Team has also conducted several cleanliness drives around the main town area including the Battle Tank area and has adopted the Box Cutting area which is cleaned every week and flowers and plants have been planted.
