Surat Smart City Development Limited (SSCDL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up by Surat Municipal Corporation for implementation of developmental projects, has completed 53 works worth Rs1,204. 22 crore in two years of the total 76 schemes worth Rs2,988.55 crores envisioned.
Furthermore, 21 projects worth Rs,1704 crore are under different stages of implementation, placing Surat in top place with regard to smart city development projects in the country.
Municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani told TOI, “Our three major projects would be worth replicating by other cities once they are completed. The Integrated Transport Mobility Administration Centre (ITMAC) and Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS) are first of its kind. The conservation of Surat Castle is another project that we are proud of. Of the eight housing projects for urban poor, most would be ready to be handed over to the beneficiaries within next two months.”
Another significant project that is under progress is installation of 3,000 CCTV cameras across the city to conduct electronic surveillance. Around 900 CCTV cameras have already been installed at entry and exit points under Suman Eye project. Bicycle sharing project is another ambitious project under implementation in the city.
CY Bhatt, deputy commissioner, SMC, said, “At present, civil and interior works for ITMAC are going on. We hope to complete this project on time.”
