Under its Smart City project, Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) will soon construct a new sports complex at the Palika stadium.

Divisional commissioner Raj Shekhar along with municipal commissioner Akshay Tripathi and deputy director sports Mudrika Pathak on Friday inspected the ground where the sports complex is to be constructed. He asked the administration to provide good facilities for sports activities for the public at all appropriate places in the city.

The proposed sports project, to be constructed under the Smart City Action Plan-2021, will have a new basketball and badminton courts, swimming pool, gym, sports item shops, cafeteria, banquet hall, parking area and an administrative office.

The commissioner, who chaired the meeting with officials, said the sports complex would be built on EPC mode (Engineer, procurement and construction) .The expression of interest EOI), would be floated in the next few days and the first presentation would be given by the interested parties in mid January, 2021, he added.

He suggested to include a cricket viewers gallery, public toilets and entry gates. He advised the municipal commissioner to create additional space around the stadium so that the existing 4 metre wide road could be widened to 14 metres in future to facilitate easy movement of traffic and easy access to the stadium

Raj Shekhar directed the municipal commissioner to ensure that the project became financially self-sustainable so that in future running and maintenance of the new sports complex did not become a burden on the Smart City Limited or on the municipal corporation. The banquet hall, sports shops and parking area needed to be developed to make the project financially viable, he said.

RK Singh, in-charge of the Smart City project talking to TOI said the commissioner visited the proposed site. Once the design and plan was finalized, the sports complex would be ready within one-and-a- half years, he added.
