The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) management has constituted a six-member task force to prepare a blueprint for converting the BSL Township into a smart city. Spread over 17,000 acres, the BSL Township is also known as Bokaro Steel City.

The committee has also been directed to come up with a blueprint for using nearly 40 dilapidated buildings, which were once used as schools, health centres, supermarkets and clubs. These buildings are lying unused for more than a decade.

The committee will also have to come up with plans to use the hundreds of BSL quarters which are being illegally occupied and to prevent water and electricity theft, among others.

The task force has three general manager-ranked officers and is headed by N P Srivastava (GM Environment). “BSL director Amarendu Prakash has constituted the task force himself,” a senior official said requesting anonymity. The task force has been directed to submit its blueprint by August 15 this year. Sources said that Union steel minister Dharmendra Pradhan has also given his nod to upgrade BSL township into a smart city.
