New systems introduced under the project utilise real-time data to adjust traffic signals in different conditions to optimise the flow and reduce congestion in busy areas. Commuters who regularly travel between home and work can use these technologies to get updates on traffic conditions, signal timings, alternative routes, etc.
Under the Smart City Project 2015, Hyderabad took a smart mobility initiative to improve the traffic system for the citizens. The Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS) and Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) was introduced for this reason.
Digital traffic services available in Hyderabad
Not only for commuters, the digital traffic service system is available in Hyderabad for every person travelling through its roads. These are some of them:
- Traffic E-Challan
The e challan ts is a digital solution to streamline the process of managing traffic violations in Hyderabad. The CCTV cameras capture images of traffic rule violations and automatically generate electronic challans.
If you are a commuter, then you can receive instant SMS notifications regarding any violations by you. It also helps in the timely payment of fines online through various platforms. This eliminates the need for physical paperwork, reduces waiting times at police stations, and enhances transparency in the process.
- Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS)
In Hyderabad, the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) significantly enhances commuter experiences by adding advanced technology for the best traffic control and management.
Approximately 221 traffic signals were integrated into a centralised command centre. The system utilises real-time data to adjust signal timings based on current traffic conditions, reducing congestion and wait times at intersections.
The system includes features such as adaptive traffic control, automated violation detection through ANPR cameras, and a variable message system to inform commuters about traffic conditions.
- Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Hyderabad help in traffic management and commuter safety. These advanced cameras capture and analyse vehicle registration plates in real-time and help to identify traffic violations such as speeding or running red lights.
E challan Hyderabad system and ANPR technology together immediately notify the offenders about the violation. This automated system reduces the need for physical police presence at every signal. Additionally, these cameras analyse data on traffic patterns that help in better-improved road safety for all commuters.
- Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC)
The Traffic Control System in Hyderabad through the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC), significantly enhances commuter experiences by adjusting signal timings based on real-time traffic conditions.
This system was implemented across over 380 traffic signals. It uses camera-based sensors to monitor vehicle flow and optimise green light durations. Thus, it reduces delays and minimises stops at intersections.
With this, the Commuters get the benefit of shorter travel times, improved road safety and reduced emissions. Also, the Pelican Signaling System ensures safer pedestrian crossings.
- Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC) system
The Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC) System in Hyderabad enhances traffic management by using sensors to detect vehicle presence. Then it adjusts traffic signal timings accordingly. As per real-time traffic conditions, it ensures that green lights are extended or shortened based on the actual flow of vehicles.
As a result, commuters may experience reduced waiting times at signals, a smoother traffic flow and decreased congestion. The VAC system not only improves travel efficiency but also helps to minimise the risk of accidents at signals.
- Hyderabad traffic helpline number
For any type of traffic-related issue in Hyderabad, you can contact this helpline number in case you need emergency assistance. You can report accidents, traffic violations, and road conditions to the traffic police department of Hyderabad.
In case of serious emergencies, you can also request to arrange quick responses including ambulances or tow trucks. In short, the Traffic Helpline is helpful to communicate with the traffic management authorities in Hyderabad.
Final thoughts
The best part of these new systems is that the Hyderabad Traffic Police won two SKOCH Awards in 2022. The Skoch Gold Award for Integrated E-Challan Database Management and the Skoch Silver Award for using ITMS Technology with ANPR cameras to monitor vehicles involved in crimes.
Overall, the digital traffic services of Hyderabad (Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System and Adaptive Traffic Signal Control) have significantly improved urban mobility for commuters. By using real-time data, these systems optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion.
