This achievement comes following the milestone accomplishment by the Federal eGovernment forranking 28th worldwide in terms of eReadiness

The government.ae portal won the 1stplace in the category of Best Government Website Award in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) within the Internet Awards contest held on the sidelines of the Internet and Mobile Show 2012 that ended recently in Dubai and was organized by Terrapin.

H.E. Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director General for Information sector and eGovernment at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), received the award in a grand ceremony attended by a number of officials and specialists in this field; it was hosted at the Madinat Arena, Jumeirah, in Dubai. The award is seen as a reflection of the level of development in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector and the UAE's leading position in this field.

Expressing his happiness for receiving the award, H.E. Salem Al Suwaidi said: "It's our honor to dedicate this award and all other achievements to our wise leadership who is extending to us all means of assistance, and helping us to overcome obstacles. On this occasion, we promise our leadership to make more efforts to promote the competitiveness of our country in the field of eGovernments, and to implement all the directives of H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minster and Ruler of Dubai to transform all governmental services to eServices within two years."

The government.ae portal competed in the final qualifications within 11 websites from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in the category ofbest government website award. This category deals with best governmental websites in terms of providing governmental services, and helping the audience benefit from information and governmental services through the web. Its condition implies that the website should be able to help to achieve eTransformation in general, aid the government to be more efficient, and reduce operational costs.

Another 20 awards in the contest were granted in six categories namely: Best eMarketing Campaign, Best eCommerce Website, Best Arabic Website, Best New Website, Best Social Media Campaign, and Best Government Website Award, which was won by the official government.ae portal.

The Internet and Mobile Show is considered to be a leading event in the ICT sector. It was convened in Dubai during 17-18 April 2012, and was attended by more than 1500 personnel from 30 countries, involving a variety of high-level speakers.

H. H.Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minster and Ruler of Dubai, launched the official portal, government.ae, in May last year.

In addition to special information related to the UAE and providing contact details, the portal gathers all federal and local eGovernment services. It also provides many free governmental applications for smart phone users.

The website includes a range of interactive features that enable browser interact with government initiatives and put forward views and ideas on various services through special pages on interactive media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The site also includes a special section for suggestions and complaints in addition to the blogsand Forums for topics related to entities and their services, polls and questionnaires for voting in certain topics regarding government services.

Through this portal the government also provides a number of open content files and documents that are available for use and re-use in line with the globally adopted concept of "Open Data." The portal aims to make the data available for the public to enable them to view statistics, reports, and government-related studies.
