Israel has launched a program to develop advanced communications applications in order to expand and improve the country's 5G infrastructure, Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) said Wednesday.
The program includes five pilot projects scheduled to be carried out by five chosen companies.
The first project includes the deployment of private 5G networks at Israel Chemicals' (ICL) Dead Sea Works potash plant and Mekorot national water company to augment coverage by private organizations.
Another one will deal with video streaming from multiple smart city cameras on 5G cellular infrastructure.
The third project will deal with communication technologies for medical centers on 5G networks at the northern Rambam Hospital, while the fourth will test advanced security solutions and MEC (mobile edge computing) applications in a real-world environment.
The fifth is a proof of concept for 5G systems in cooperation with the Directorate of Defense R&D (MAFAT) at Israel's Defense Ministry.
The IIA and the Israeli Ministry of Communications awarded a total of 12.5 million new shekels (3.89 million U.S. dollars) in grants to the selected companies for supporting their pilot activity.
"The program aims at creating significant breakthroughs, propelling Israel to the exclusive group of nations developing technologies for applications destined to change our way of life in the 5G environment," the IIA said.
