Hefei, the capital of East China's Anhui province, set up a government agency responsible for data resource management on Monday, as part of its effort to boost the big data industry and push ahead with its “smart city” program.

Dubbed“gold ore” or “new oil” of the Information Age, data resources are becoming vital, basic and strategic.

The Hefei Municipal Data Administration takes charge of areas like information-based development, e-governance, “smart city” vision, big data and Internet Plus. It plans to build network platforms, including one for big data management, one to provide e-government services and another to offer public services.

The administration has hired seven data experts and signed cooperation deals with China Telecom, USTC iFlytek and 16 other companies.
