JD.com is looking to increase its efforts in helping cities in China become a smart city by combining its work on big data, artificial intelligence and Internet of things into the real economy.

To do this, the e-commerce player has created a new smart city brand named JD iCity, which aims to be an industry digitalization partner and 'intelligent total solution provider' for China's urban development.

According to JD.com, it has kept a close eye on smart city constructions in China and will work with local governments in Suqian and Nantong, Jiangsu province and Xiongan New Area throughout 2019 to build smart cities.

Presently, JD.com is providing tech support to more than 30 cities such as Tianjin, Nanjing, Fuzhou and Chengdu, and has established a close partnership with China Unicom and China Energy Investment Group.

It also plans to build a JD-branded smart town, that will include smart retail, IOT, logistics lighting and transporting.

JD.com's main rival in China, Alibaba is already working on smart innovations in this area. It has previously introduced ET City Brain to combat China's notoriously heavy traffic and the Aviation Brain, which uses analysis of security check and passenger monitoring, automatic facial recognition system for security check and intelligent stand assignment system in airports.
