As the permanent site of the World Internet Conference, Wuzhen is a town famous for not only its 1,000-year-old history but for its modernity fueled by the digital economy and improved access to the internet and intelligent services.

With the support of internet technology, Wuzhen has seen rapid development of its digital economy enterprises. From 2014 to 2022, the number of digital economy enterprises increased from 12 to more than 1,000.

In the first half of this year, core industries in the town's digital economy invested 1.59 billion yuan ($219.28 million), a year-on-year increase of 27.24 percent, accelerating structural upgrades to pursue stable growth pathways and high-quality development.

The "Light of Wuzhen" project has been under construction since last year's WIC and has become the event's landmark. The "Light of Wuzhen" supercomputing center has more than 3,600 users and a computing power utilization rate of 40 percent.

At present, the supercomputing center adopts the technical achievements of the E-class supercomputer prototype. Its data storage capacity reaches 60 petabytes and its overall computing power is among the international top 10. The center is used for smart city construction, artificial intelligence, research and development of new materials, and the interpretation of genetic codes.

In addition to serving scientific research and industry, the supercomputing technology has also served elements of daily life.

According to Hu Fan, chief engineer of the "Light of Wuzhen" supercomputing center, in terms of film production, special effects require a high-performance computer to support the rendering and production of large-scale scenes.

Meteorological prediction is another common application of supercomputing. Many weather forecasts are the result of supercomputing predictions. At present, supercomputers can accurately simulate and observe the movement of clouds. There will be faster supercomputers in the future, which will make weather forecasts more accurate, Hu said.

The Wuzhen Academicians' House, which opened in May 2020, has attracted 53 academicians from home and abroad so far. It has also drawn more than 100 academicians to visit, and five industrial projects led by experts to settle there. It helps promote industrial transformation and upgrading, making the digital economy the fastest-growing and highest potential sector in Wuzhen.
