The Information Te-chnology Authority (ITA) represented by the government eTransformation plan team organised a one-day workshop on its premises in Knowledge Oasis Muscat.

The workshop on ‘Smart Cities,’ in line with the eTransformation Plan, was held in cooperation with information technology research and advisory company Gartner.

Attended by representatives from various government entities, the workshop was presented by Gratner’s research vice-president for environmental sustainability Bettina Tratz-Ryan.

She explained the vision of smart cities with improved citizen services and satisfaction, by creating efficient transport, health, energy and many more solutions for society.

“Critical Guidance is a must on how we construct and modulate a smart city from a framework perspective and how to create citizen value from the collaboration between government entities as well as citizens and business,” Bettina said.

On the culture of smart cities in the Arab region, Bettina added: “The smart city has not one individual benchmark so we can say some nations are below or above. I think it is in the spirit of what smart city wants to reach. It does not only involve urban infrastructure and performance, but it really wants to reach down to the level of citizens and people and create better quality life and living conditions. I think in this respect, the Arab world is focused on creating that citizen and social environment”.

The workshop was part of the ongoing eTransformation series for 2015. They contribute to the provision of skills and expertise necessary to support and develop ICT industry requirements, to achieve the objectives of the national eGovernment Transformation Plan.
