The Federal Government says it is embarking on Smart City project in order to leverage on technology solutions to improve efficiency of cities across the country.

The minister of communication Adebayo Shittu disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the Smart Cities Nigeria Summit yesterday in Abuja.

The minister said the with the development of new technological innovations -mainly ICTs- the concept of the “Smart City” has emerged as a means to achieve more efficient and sustainable cities.

Since its conception, the Smart City notion has evolved from the execution of specific projects to the implementation of global strategies to tackle wider city challenges, he said.

He said the project would assist the federal government to develop practical steps and solutions that would bring together areas traditionally viewed as separate: energy and mobility, government and health, education and environment.

He stated that the Muhammadu Buhari administration through the Ministry of Communications has developed cogent policies, frameworks and guidelines for combating the challenges faced in the urban centres.

“The Nigerian ICT Road Map 2016-2020, the National Strategic Plan 2016-2024, the broad band policy, the new Power Sector Reforms, and the Nigerian Smart City Initiative are some of the initiatives by government toward addressing these issues,” he said.

But he said smart cities were not built by one organization or a sector of government but by a collective of all stakeholders. In his remarks, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Arc. Sonny Echono, said It is also expected that this forum will promote better understanding of the enormous potentials in the smart city initiative towards job creation, crime prevention and control, alternative energy, intelligent transportation, automated homes and cities, e-government and e-health, fight against corruption, diversification of the economy, which is in the front burner of the present administration led by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking earlier on the topic digital economy boosting unlimited,, the managing director of Huawei Nigeria, Mr Tanl Li, said federal government is about to launch the “Smart Nigeria Digital Economy Project” that aims to solve efficiency problems and create leapfrog opportunities in the economy for the next 10 years.

‘Based on above insight and assumptions, Huawei is committed to building the technological infrastructure that will harmonize devices, pipe, and the cloud. These will serve as the backbone of a digital economy. As such, devices, pipe, and cloud technology are the strategic focus of Huawei’s investment in the future,’ he added.
