Muthialu said the project will also create significant economic opportunity, building on the influence of Lanseria International Airport, in the vicinity of marginalised communities like Diepsloot.

A team of professionals who was appointed by Gauteng provincial government to draft a Greater Lanseria Master Plan said it had completed the plan and it had been made available for public comment.

Stakeholder engagement director for Greater Lanseria Master Plan team, Nomi Muthialu said, “The draft of a Greater Lanseria Master Plan has now been completed and it has been made available for public comment during a 30-day comment period commencing on 4 November and ending at close of business on 4 December.

“The plan is the first stage in the development plan of the new post-apartheid Smart City in Lanseria that was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his 2020 State of the Nation Address.”

The project is one of 30 planned for Gauteng.

Muthialu added that a Smart City in the South African context must use innovative technologies to provide smarter and more sustainable services to create a new normality that would change the spatial architecture, and provide social and economic opportunity for all South Africans.

“The master plan looks at transport, water, sanitation, storm water management, electricity, solid waste, information and communication technologies, health, education, social and economic infrastructure, agriculture, environmental and heritage aspects.”

Muthialu added that the Master Plan will also propose governance and institutional arrangements for the area.

“It will also create significant economic opportunity, building on the influence of Lanseria International Airport in the vicinity of marginalised communities like Diepsloot and Cosmo City on this north-western periphery of the Gauteng City Region and provide a basis for sustainable urban consolidation in this area.”
