The MENA region is making substantial investments in smart cities. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have consistently secured spots among the top 20 smart cities globally for the third consecutive year, per the Smart City Index 2023 by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD).

The rise of smart cities in the Middle East

The Middle East is now a global leader in cutting-edge urban development with projects like NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s cognitive city, which is set to revolutionise urban living with AI and streamline data, transportation, and city-wide communication.

Masdar City in the UAE is known to blend ancient Arabic design with modern technology in a large cluster of high-performance buildings. Masdar will be a real-time lab pioneering resource-efficient urban living. These cities embrace the smart city idea, using tech and data to improve everything from transportation and energy to safety and citizen participation.

Smart cities are no longer just a dream; they’re becoming a reality. According to IMD’s index, Abu Dhabi ranks 13th out of 141 cities, making it the smartest in the region, while Dubai is 17th. IMD emphasises that smart cities go beyond digital infrastructure, focusing on human well-being in urban development.

The Middle East’s visionaries have recognised the potential of integrating technology into urban infrastructure, making cities not only more efficient but also more responsive to the needs of their residents.

The global smart cities market is projected to reach approximately $873.7 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 13.8%, as stated by the UAE Ministry of Economy.

The smart buildings market is projected to reach approximately $229.1 billion by 2026, and the global mobility service market will rise to about $40.1 billion by 2030. These developments are evident in surveillance and security as cities grow more complex, prioritising citizen safety and resource management. Data-driven video management software plays a crucial role in this context.
