The Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) launched the BAC Industry Skills Centre (BIISC) last week as an industry skills hub for training, planning and implementation of organisation wide ICT projects.

Speaking during the launch, BAC Executive Director Michael Lesolle said the establishment of the centre was in response to internal and external stakeholder ICT needs as it will enhance relevant skills value of the individuals within the computing, communication, innovation and information services sector.

“I am extremely excited about this one of a kind, industry driven and industry focused ICT programme offerings.

“It is a business imperative college to host the best ICT brand names in the world, as it is a facility that is available to both the undergraduates and the industry practitioners,” he said.

Further, Lesolle noted that the Centre and its offerings will not only be confined to the technically inclined computing and information systems undergraduates, but will also offer inclusive, experimental and outcome-based blended learning model which comes with the partnership with Cisco Systems, Inc (CISCO), SAP University and Microsoft.

According to the Executive Director, this partnership will attract students from different backgrounds thus producing employment ready graduates and ultimately respond to the human resource needs of the country.

CISCOis an American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells networking equipment.

“We are the first institution in Botswana to partner with Microsoft Academy and the first institution in Botswana to receive the SAP University Partner accolade. Suitable students interested in exploring careers in Microsoft technology line products can join the Microsoft Academy through the BIISC,” he said. The SAP Academy in collaboration with SAP University Alliances, delivers hands-on training on various courses leading to globally recognised SAP certifications.

For his part, the Minister of Infrastructure Science and Technology (MIST), Nonofo Molefhi stressed the importance of ICT in the economic diversification saying that ICT has become a national priority in Botswana, which will result in the strengthening of ICT human resources.

“It is pleasing to see BAC working hard to close the ICT industry relevant skills gap to further develop our human resource pool. This is instrumental in enhancing the sustainability and growth of our economy by availing such programs through BIISC.”

The Minister further said the launch of the BIISC is opportune as the college can be relied upon to deliver into the economy, relevant skills that target current and future needs within the knowledge based economy.

ICT is regarded as an important tool for efficient delivery of public services to Botswana. To this end, Government has adopted the e-government programme in order to enhance innovation in the public sector.
