The Minister of Transport and Communications, Tshenolo Mabeo has urged government to take advantage of the Fourth Generation (4G) technology in order to enhance its services. He was speaking at the launch of the Orange 4G technology last week.

Mabeo said the new technology could benefit the e-government, e-health and e-education programmes and the nation, adding that telemedicine could help save many lives as mostly specialist doctors are based in urban areas.

“The introduction of 4G with its faster internet and more universal access is also timely in that it fits together with the Government of Botswana’s e- Government strategy, which is currently being implemented,” he said.

The minister complimented the introduction of the 4G, noting that it was pleasing to usher in 4G, a few years after the technology was introduced overseas, adding that all these projects were in line with the implementation of the draft Broadband Strategy.

Mabeo pointed out that the underground optic fibre backbone projects that he had just launched nationwide would facilitate the smooth delivery of 4G services. “Last week, I went around the country ground breaking the works for the implementation of Sehithwa-Mohembo, Maun-Ngoma and Sekoma-Tsabong underground optical fibre backbone projects which will help in the 4G roll out,” he said.

These optic cables will facilitate and enhance connectivity to even greater levels thus enabling service providers like Orange to reach their customers more efficiently.

Mabeo added that telecommunication company would enhance its role in the attainment of the country’s economic blueprint of Vision 2016, which acknowledges that the deployment and usage of ICT is one of the major enablers to reach targets. He also said studies into 4G’ s business benefits revealed that some businesses expected the technology to help increase productivity by up to 58 percent, and boost employee’ well-being by up to 38 percent. He said it was evident that this technology would also help firms compete through innovation.

Orange Botswana Chief Executive Officer Dr. Patrick Benon said he had the ambition to telecommunications outfit the most innovative operator assuring that they will continue to be the first to introduce key technologies into the market.

“In the past, we have been the first to offer 3G services in Botswana and the first to launch Visa card linked to money services. I am proud to announce another ground breaking innovation form Orange Botswana, for the first time, the Fourth Generation wireless technology,” he said.

Benon added that since 4G was much faster; it would change the way people interacted globally. The Orange 4G network is currently live and functional in Gaborone. The network will be rolled out to Palapye, Maun and Francistown by the end of February. During the 2014/15 financial year, government provided P400 million for the development of a further 1000 km national backbone and local access optical fibre network.
