GCC countries should learn from advancements made by Bahrain in the field of information communication technology (ICT), said a top official.

Transportation Minister Kamal Ahmed said Bahrain had taken great strides in making the latest in ICT available to people.

He was speaking at the opening session of Meet ICT - an annual gathering of ICT professionals and experts from Bahrain and the region, which is being organised by Gulf Future Business in co-operation with Bahrain ICT Suppliers Trade Association (BISTA).

Bahrain's eGovernment Authority (eGA) and the Economic Development Board are strategic partners for the three-day event, which is held under the patronage of the minister at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.

"The rapid expansion in the reach of ICT in Bahrain is an example and it is expanding even more now," said Mr Ahmed.

"Most government services are now available online to allow easy and convenient access to the people." Mr Ahmed said the event will provide a forum for experts in the field to come to Bahrain and allow companies in the country to share their knowledge and expertise with the visitors.

BISTA and event organising committee chairman Ubaydli Ubaydli said the forum will enhance the experience of participants and enable them to exchange knowledge and ideas on different platforms.

"During the event, a two-day conference will include distinguished speakers and renowned panellists, who will discuss and debate on the hottest issues affecting the regional ICT industry," he said.

"Three parallel workshops will cover advanced topics of ICT that will include: mobile security threats and protection, IT risk management and service management."

eGA chief executive officer Mohammed Al Qaed said such events assist in ICT capacity building and in bringing together top IT and ICT providers in addition to well-known international leaders and experts on one platform.

"Such an initiative follows our mission in establishing a forum for various stakeholders in order to continuously share knowledge," he added. Mr Ahmed said an agreement was signed with a specialised firm to carry out a comprehensive study of Bahrain's public transport network. The firm will identify number of buses, stations, public transport lines and areas to be added to the network. A tender will be launched in the first quarter of 2014 for offering services.
