Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has declared that modernisation of the Saint Lucia public service is critical, especially given his administration’s emphasis on e-government.

Chastanet, who has relieved himself of responsibility for the public service, told reporters Tuesday there was need for a ‘day to day minister’ to oversee the sector.

Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Doctor Ubaldus Raymond, this week announced that he had been given the public service portfolio as of July 1, 2018.

Prime Minister Chastanet explained that the modernisation of the public sector is a critical policy of the government.

“We are working very hard and I think Mr. Raymond will do a phenomenal job in that regard.”

Chastanet recalled that his administration has spoken of restructuring the civil service.

“We want to be able to modernise the civil service. We want to ensure that people are getting paid well. We want to make sure that we can keep expanding and meeting the needs of the general public,” he stated.

“I don’t think that anybody can sit here and say that the civil service is performing at its best level and every single Saint Lucian is satisfied with the quality of service they are receiving,” the Prime Minister asserted.
