Living in a city where digital innovation and technology are used to drive sustainability and liveability is a dream for many people. Such urban settlements are called "smart cities." A recent survey showed that Singapore has been the best example of such an innovative city for the past two years

For several years, Singapore has invested in innovations designed to increase the use of electric and autonomous vehicles. The city has also given access to its inhabitants to data such as city noise levels, levels of air humidity and parking spots available... With such initiatives common for its inhabitants, the city-state remains the smartest city worldwide for the second year in a row in a recent ranking.

This report, published by the Institute of Management Development (IMD), in Lausanne, Switzerland, shows how new technologies can impact the quality of life of citizens. This study looked at 109 cities in total (seven more than in last year's inaugural edition) between April and May 2020, analysing five key areas: health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities and governance.

For this year's edition, the Covid-19 pandemic had a great impact on the results of every city surveyed. "This year's Smart City Index suggests that the cities that have been able to combine technologies, leadership and a strong culture of ‘living and acting together' should be able to better withstand the most damaging effects of such crises," said Bruno Lanvin, President of the IMD.

Digital tracking implemented in Singapore clearly helped the city-state to tackle the pandemic.

"Those with better technology manage the pandemic better," said Professor Arturo Bris, Director of the IMD World Competitiveness Center. He underlined that while smart cities are not in themselves the solution to a pandemic, technology certainly helps a community cope.

European countries also rank high in this international survey, notably on its podium. Helsinki, Finland comes second, ahead of Zurich, Switzerland.

Here are the top 10 "smart cities":

  1. Singapore
  2. Helsinki
  3. Zurich
  4. Auckland
  5. Oslo
  6. Copenhagen
  7. Geneva
  8. Taipei
  9. Amsterdam
  10. New York
