In the face of rapid urban population growth, IoT and the smart city offer the most promising solutions. Throughout a metropolis, Internet of Things (IoT)--connected sensors are installed to monitor and record data on traffic, energy consumption, and garbage collection. Smart cities improve urban efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of life. Smart cities extensively use Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve asset, resource, and service management by increasing data collection and insight development.
The Internet of Things technologies form the basis of a smart city, and the novel applications result from their application. A smart city employs cutting-edge technology, such as a vast network of sensors and networked devices, to capture real-time data to streamline public services and reduce costs. Smart cities employ many technologies to provide their residents with cutting-edge amenities.
New IoT applications are also contributing to this transition. Intelligent transportation, smart buildings, smart energy grids, meters, smart governance, smart healthcare, smart public safety, and environmentally favorable policies are just a few distinguishing characteristics of a smart city, which can take many different forms. A smart city does not exist in a vacuum. Instead, it is a collection of intelligent solutions that work together to improve urban living conditions. The development of smart cities requires collaboration between the public and private sectors.
The network of physical objects, such as vehicles, devices, and buildings, is embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity to capture and exchange data with IoT. These connected devices can communicate with others and systems, enabling them to function seamlessly and share information. IoT and smart cities are being utilized to efficiently meet the escalating resource demands of many residing, working, driving, and interacting residents. For instance, IoT and smart city initiatives are being implemented to enhance traffic management, energy consumption, public safety, and healthcare, among other areas.
IoT is the technical backbone of every smart city worldwide. It gives them the intelligence, interconnection, and tools required to enhance urban services, optimize resources, and reduce costs. There are distinct obstacles to fully realizing the vision of a smart city, with security currently being the most significant concern. The interconnectedness of IoT devices creates new cyberattacks, data intrusion, and unauthorized access vulnerabilities. As the number of IoT devices in a city rapidly increases, so does the quantity of data generated, straining the capacity of existing IoT systems.
