For the first time in the history of state, Ahmedabad bagged its first gold in e-governance in the country. The gold awarded in Information Communication Technology (ICT) category that is for using technology to bridge gap between citizens and local government.

The award proves that technology models adopted by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for its smooth and transparent functioning can be adopted by cities in the rest of the country. The award is being jointly instituted by the department of administrative reforms & public grievances and department of information technology, Government of India every year.

During the media briefing on national awards for e-governance 2008-09 on Saturday, AMC officials revealed that

starting from April, tax payers can also pay their taxes at sub zonal offices in 55 municipal wards of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Citizens will also be able to know their complaint status online as all offices will be connected via two megabits per second (MBPS) lease line plus Integrated Services Digital Network(ISDN), a telephone system network for back up line.

AMC will also be launching an additional city civic centre for the users in the recently merged areas of Chandkheda.

AMC e-service was shortlisted among 222 different municipalities and government organisations from across the country. A panel comprising experts from Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad among others visited and checked the e-services provided by the AMC in the 26 city civic centres.

On the future expansion of e-services, municipal commissioner, AMC, IP Gautam says, "We are planning to have one civic centre between every lakh population in AMC limits."

Giving a presentation on Exemplary horizontal Transfer of ICT based best practises, deputy municipal commissioner, Captain Dilip Mahajan says, "The e-city services are instrumental in eliminating discretionary human interface, making it more user-friendly. The success of e-city can be gauged by the fact that in last six years, the property tax collection from this IT based service has increased from 38 per cent to 80 per cent."

In fact, AMC uses e-city as a tool to deliver all its functions to 56 lakh citizens of city through its 26 city civic centres (e-city centres) located in six municipal zones.
