Recent reports in the Vietnamese press indicate that state-owned operator MobiFone has successfully piloted a 5G mobile network in four Vietnamese cities.
The trials, in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Hai Phong, achieved download speeds of approximately 2Gbps, according to a MobiFone spokesman.
MobiFone has said it is now ready to implement a 5G mobile network and applications for customers, highlighting the potential of 5G in entertainment, business, transportation, healthcare and education as well as e-government and smart cities.
MobiFone is the second mobile operator in Vietnam approved by the Ministry of Information and Communications to pilot 5G technology.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Telecom’s (SLT) mobile unit Mobitel has activated its first 5G base station. This took place at a retail outlet in One Galle Face to which the operator invited “streamers, customers, gamers and digital nomads” to try out 5G ahead of its planned rollout.
The event was attended by Oshada Senanayake, director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, as well as representatives of SLT and Mobitel.
Mobitel demonstrated 5G technology last year at the grand opening of the Ancient Technology Museum in Polonnaruwa. It also carried out a series of 5G trials using a commercially available 5G-equipped smartphone in June.
According to local press reports, Mobitel is setting aside significant sums to continue the upgrade and modernisation of its networks in Sri Lanka this year and to prepare for the commercial launch of 5G. However, when and where 5G will be launched has not yet been announced.
