  • AE: Role of eGovernment emphasised

    Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, deputy director general, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority — Information and eGovernment Sector, emphasised the fortifying role of eGovernment at the opening ceremony of the Arab Thought Foundation’s eleventh annual conference on Nov.26.

    The three-day conference was held at Grand Hyatt, Dubai.

    It discussed the challenges Arab governments face and the mechanism to overcome those along with finding newer and better methods of delivering services to the public.

  • AE: Row of eservices launched at Gitex

    Gitex Technology Week witnessed the launch of a slew of eservices across government entities.

    Smartphone applications, TV programmes, e-system, e-step, e-mart — all these initiatives have been launched to enhance the ease of doing business across sectors.

    Sami Al Qamzi, Director-General of the Department of Economic Development in Dubai (DED), said: “Dubai is witnessing an increasing number of business services due to the government’s policy focus and infrastructure development, well-aligned to business and investment. The private sector is not just a beneficiary but also a primary stakeholder in any improvements in Dubai’s business climate and, therefore, we are keen to engage with them in our economic development initiatives.”

  • AE: RTA learns about Dubai Police experience in e-fax

    The Roads & Transport Authority - Nashwan Atta'ee: A delegation from the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), comprising officials from the Administrative Services and IT Departments, has recently visited the General Department of E-Services at the General Headquarters of Dubai Police to review the best practices at world-class standards adopted by the Dep't, and exchange views towards boosting the existing bilateral relations between the parties.

    The RTA delegation was headed by the Director of Administrative Services Nabeel Yousef Al Ali, and consisted of Mohammed Obaid Suroor, Office Services Manager at the Administrative Services Dep't; in addition to Senior Analysit Raafat Ali, Project Manager Maher Alaa Uddin, and Senior Analyst Anas Abu Laban at RTA IT Dep't.

    Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, inaugurated a Central Electronic Services Database for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), on Wednesday to help ministry departments develop plans, improve the quality of customer service and performance indicators.

    The Sharjah Department of eGovernment (DeG) concluded its participation on Sept.28 in the “Elderly Services Forum 2016”, which was organised by the Sharjah Department of Social Service in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), as part of its commitment to providing the highest international standards of government services to all customers.

    The forum sought to create and implement innovative methods, aimed at supporting and meeting the needs of the elderly in accessing public services through modern technology and facilities.

    The Department of eGovernment, Sharjah, announced that 36 government departments in the Emirate are to participate in the GITEX Technology Week 2018.

    All participating government departments will be showcasing their latest services at the pavilion of Sharjah Government, and a number of innovative technological projects are to be unveiled for the first time GITEX.

    Sharjah's Department of eGovernment (DeG) organised a workshop for various departments on Thursday to discuss their participation in Gitex Technology Week 2016, taking place from October 16 to 20 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

    "The workshop featured a presentation about DeG's participation at Gitex and provided details of our latest apps for Sharjah, which will be launched during the exhibition," said Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, director-general of DeG. "These [apps] include digital links between government departments to increase connectivity and improve the flow of information, and high level cyber-security systems to effectively protect and secure data during storage, retrieval and transmission."

  • AE: Sharjah motorists to get driving licence online

    Effective from the beginning of next month (Oct.1) motorists can renew and get their driving licence issued online. The driving licence section of Sharjah Police has unveiled plans of stopping any transactions at the centre that should be completed electronically by downloading from the Ministry of Interior app store (UAE-MOI).

    Colonel Ali Bu Al Zod, Director of the Licence of Motorists at Sharjah Police, said that the smart e-service through the Ministry of Interior application should be used by motorists for various traffic services including a new driving licence and renewal, and issuing a new licence for a lost one.

    More than 500 advanced cameras worth Dh30m to monitor Sharjah roads

    Close circuit television (CCTV) surveillance systems will be installed in Sharjah to help police and other security forces to have an eye on the public to enhance security services and prevent crimes.

    The best and latest surveillance cameras are currently being used on Sharjah roads. The step of installing the newly advanced cameras comes as part of the Sharjah Police’s ambitious project titled ‘Sharjah is a safe city’.

    His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a law pertaining to the organisation of the Electronic Government Department in the emirate.

    Law No.04 for the year 2015 stipulates that the department will enjoy full juridical character and capacity to discharge all legal tasks necessary to realise its objectives.

  • AE: Skyline Conducted Pocket MBA on E-Governance, AI and Robotics, and Enterprising Sustainable Smart Cities

    Skyline University College organized the second edition of One Day Refresher Course in Management with Emphasis on E-Governance, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Enterprising Sustainable Smart Cities (Pocket MBA) on April 18, 2018 at SUC Campus. Delegates such as tourism directors, managers, software engineers, IT directors, and SUC Alumni from various corporate and government offices in the UAE have participated in the program.

    The Pocket MBA covered an introduction to E-Governance, a discussion on disruptions which are disrupting the supply line of existing business model, and an insightful overview about difference between Sustainable Innovations and Disruptive Innovations. It also included the topics of emerging technologies like Block Chain, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics. Finally, the program provided an understanding on the application of various technologies in building and developing Enterprising Sustainable Smart Cities. The case studies of Kodak and Chicago Smart City were used in the discussion during the program.

    Smart Dubai has released guidelines for organisations for the ethical use of AI.

    The ‘Ethical AI Toolkit' has been created to encourage organisations to develop AI services that prioritize fairness, transparency and accountability.

    The guidelines have been developed by Smart Dubai because the smart government entity says there is a need for initial guidelines while regulations are being developed, so that AI development can go ahead without stifling innovation.

    Dubai Paperless Strategy saw six government entities reduced paper use by 57 per cent in the last six months.

    Smart Dubai is working with nine government entities in the second phase this year in their endeavor to go paperless by 2021, a senior official said at a conference on Wednesday.

    In the first phase, Dubai Paperless Strategy saw six government entities reduced paper use by 57 per cent in the last six months, exceeding their initial target set for 50 per cent digital transformation of transactions.

    It is not an overstatement to say that smart governance will bring government organizations closer to the people. As someone who works in the media department of a government entity, I am always happy to see government departments using e-services and social media to promote and inform the public of services that concern them.

    I can clearly see that smart governance creates a bridge that engages the public with government departments.

    Loads of smartphone apps or online facilities are here to make life easier for you. You can book a taxi, direct emergency workers, check Metro timings, pay utility bills, check medical fitness test requirements, start a business or pay traffic fines or parking fees from your phone or tablet. Dubai has recently launched an “m-government” initiative to make more public services available on smartphones. That’s in addition to the 2,000 e-government services on the web.     The fourth Ramadan Majlis, organised by Sharjah Media Centre (SMC), continued on June 23 with a session entitled “The Requirements of Transformation to Smart Government under Technological Dominance” and discussed issues related to the UAE government’s vision to provide 24-hour services to the public.

    The Department of e-Government of the Government of Sharjah is undertaking a number of initiatives to inculcate a spirit of innovation and love of technology in students in the Emirate from an early age, encouraging them to choose Information Technology and programming as a major and as a future career.

    Health Authority pushes for self-service technology

    A new self-service technology concept is being considered by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to enable users to access health information at any time, place or platform.

    Under this umbrella concept, various e-services will revolve around the user as demonstrated during the recent GITEX Technology Week during which the authority presented an array of technologies. One aspect of e-services is the mHealth mobile service which allows users to view their lab results, manage appointments, and keep track of prescriptions and children’s vaccination schedules among others.
