  • ASEAN Ministers emphasise cooperation in ICT initiatives

    Recognising the importance of technology in improving efficiency and transparency in public service delivery, countries across southeast Asia have been undertaking e-government initiatives at various stages. To better support these ICT initiatives, members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) promote regional cooperation through the ASEAN ICT Masterplan.

    Speaking to FutureGov, Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim, shared, “Application of ICT in public sector is one of the key initiatives of the ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2015. But recognising that different states have different levels of development, ASEAN has left the implementation of these initiatives to the various states.”

  • ASEAN Plus 3 e-govt center likely to be set up in Seoul

    South Korea Thursday proposed creating an integrated ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Plus Three (China, South Korea and Japan) e-government center in Seoul next year on the sidelines of an international meeting on better governance being held here, reported South Korean Yonhap News Agency.

    The e-government center proposal was presented to the "ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials' Meeting on Creative Management for Government" held in Seoul on the sidelines of the UN-sponsored Sixth Global Forum on Reinventing Government, which kicked off four-day meeting on Tuesday.

    ICT Ministers of ASEAN member-countries gathered in Cebu, the Philippines last week and agreed to enhance their collaboration on critical ICT programmes towards implementing the ASEAN ICT Masterplan (AIM) targeted for completion by 2015.

    Vice President Jejomar Binay represented President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino in the 12th Asean Telecommunications and IT Ministers (TELMIN) meeting during November 15 and 16, noting that ASEAN is stronger when connected and in creating ICT jobs.

  • ASEAN vows to improve broadband access

    Telecommunications and information communications technology (ICT) ministers in Southeast Asia have agreed to improve collaboration to provide widespread and high-speed broadband access in the region.

    In its Mactan Cebu Declaration, ICT ministers from member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) said they are working towards the implementation of the proposed ASEAN Broadband Corridor and the establishment of an ASEAN Internet Exchange Network by 2015 to facilitate sharing of resources among Internet providers to improve access speed and lower costs.

    The Ministry of Communication and Informatics is supporting the development of the digital community in the Southeast Asia region by implementing four aspects of inclusive digital transformation acceleration.

    The government will expand software-centered information and communication technology (ICT) exports, such as AI and metaverse, and promote market diversification to help domestic companies enter the Middle East, Japan and ASEAN markets as Korea's exports show signs of being impacted considerably by the U.S.-China trade dispute and the global economic downturn, officials said, Monday.

    The Ministry of Science and ICT announced a strategy to expand the country's high-tech exports by encouraging domestic companies to enter new markets and foster innovative companies in the software sector during a service industry development task force meeting chaired by Choo Kyung-ho, deputy prime minister for economic affairs, and minister of economy and finance.
