  • Connecting the Gambia to the World of ICT

    The Government of the Gambia under the leadership of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh has connected the Gambia to the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This is in line with his vision to provide the requisite infrastructure and create the enabling environment to ensure that ICT services are within the reach of each and every Gambian at anytime, anywhere and at affordable prices.

    Under President Jammeh's government, ICT plays a crucial role in all sectors of the country's economy, boosting agricultural productivity and in providing the health sector with the necessary ICT infrastructure to improve delivery of services. In the same vein, the Ministry of Information Communication and Infrastructure (MOICI) is exploring ways and means of integrating the ICT needs of disadvantaged groups in society, while facilitating the development of ICT to support education delivery.

  • Gambia launches first ever government web portal

    The Gambian government has launched the first ever governmental web portal (www.gambia.gov.gm). The event which coincided with the President’s 45th birthday anniversary was held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Kololi and presided over by the vice president, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie Saidy.

    Delivering the launching statement on behalf of President Jammeh, the vice president noted that the government has been working tirelessly to create a Web-Portal that would serve as a window through which people everywhere can access information virtually about everything happening within our borders that require greater public awareness, understanding and appreciation. He then hailed the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the process.

  • Gambia NICI implementation plan adopted

    Following a series of consultations, a workshop held in Banjul on August 26 which brought together various stakeholders from the government, private sector, non-government organisations (NGOs), community-based organisations (CBOs), academia, and the media fraternity, reviewed and endorsed “the Gambian ICT4D-2012 Plan”.

    The document is the result of a series of activities which started in 2003, in the framework of the African Information Society Initiative (AISI), and which culminated in the adoption of The Gambia National Information and Communication Infrastructure (NICI) Policy in 2006.

  • Gambia to introduce biometric passport

    Gambia will introduce the biometric passport to discourage forgery and easy access to passports in the West African nation, the immigration department told Xinhua on Monday.

    The new passport will cost 100 U. S. dollars and will serve for five years before expiry.

    If all goes well, it will be the second time for the West African nation to introduce biometric documentation after the national identity card, which was put to use in 2011.

  • Gambia: E-Gov’t gets Taiwan boost

    The Department of State for Communication, Information and Technology (DoCIT) yesterday received an advanced e-mail server in support of E-Government of The Gambia from the Government of Taiwan.

    Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at premises of DoCIT, Mr Patrick Chang, the Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia, said: “The e-mail server is a state of the art product of Taiwan; with its 110 gigabyte storage and built-in Virtue Private Network (VPN) and Firewall, it can provide e-mail services for 1000 governments employees with 100 megabytes storage of each account by using .gov. gm.

  • Gambia: Government to Improve Access to ICTs

    The Gambia Government is committed to improving access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) and promoting their use to stimulate economic growth, equality and poverty reduction.

    The Department of State for Communication, Information and Technology (DOSCIT) is also committed to creating the necessary enabling environment. This would enable government and the public utilise the opportunities offered by ICTs and their applications to service delivery, operational efficiency and improvement of people's lives.

  • Gambia: Live TV Broadcast For Assembly Sittings From January

    Gambians would at last be able to view and listen to National Assembly sessions on radio, television and the Internet with effect from January 2007 as the proceedings are going to be broadcast live on the main media outlets. This was disclosed by the Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly, Belinda Bidwell, during the Thursday 10th August sitting, the third meeting of the National Assembly in the 2006 legislative session.
  • Gambia: New ICT Bill in the Offing

    In its drive towards the development of the ICT sector in The Gambia, the Department of State for Communication, Information and Information Technology is putting finishing touches to a new Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) bill, for presentation at the National Assembly towards the end of the 2008 legislative year.

    The draft bill, which was the subject of a one-day review and validation workshop at the Paradise Suites hotel yesterday, is among others envisaged to encourage a more rational liberalisation of the Communication, Information and Information Technology sector of the country, whenever it becomes law.

    President Yahya Jammeh, on Tuesday, launched the Electronic government (E-government), a system facilitated through the use of information, communication and technology (ICT), initiated by the department of state for Communication Information and Technology (DOSCIT).
  • Gambia: Rural people must benefit from ICT

    President Yahya Jammeh on Sunday warned that any development that did not put particular emphasis on its benefits for the rural people would not get the full blessing of his government.

    This was disclosed on his behalf by Mrs Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, Secretary of State for Communication, Information and Technology, at the inauguration ceremony of the new head office of the Quantum Associates on Gacem Road at the Kanifing Industrial Estate.

  • Gambia: Vice President Launches E-Government Project

    The government of The Gambia under the auspicious of DOSCIT has recently launched the E-Government project at the GRTS Building Complex, presided over by the Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy.

    The objective of the E-Government project among other things include delivering first class public services, increasing citizen's participation, and streamlining public services.

  • Gambia's First Digital Opportunity Center Commissioned

    The country's first Digital Opportunity Center, housed at The Gambia Telecommunications and Multimedia Institute (GTMI) in Kanifing, was Tuesday commissioned by the minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure, Nana Grey Johnson. Funded by the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) at a tune of US39,750 US, the Center is established to help strengthen the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) capacity and training for government officials as part of the implementation of The Gambia's e-government strategy.

  • Gambian delegation visits Ghana national data centre

    A six member delegation from The Gambia has paid a visit to the Ghana National Data Centre as part of a five day tour to understudy Ghana’s e-government project in Accra.

    The e-government project is being implemented by the government of Ghana, under the sponsorship of the World Bank, to assist government to generate growth and employment to influence Information and Communication Technology and public private partnership.

  • GM: GCCPC Trained Journalists on E-Government Consumer Protection Reporting

    The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) on Tuesday organize day training for journalists on reporting on consumer protection and matters affecting the consumer at the market at its head office in Kotu East.

    Amadou Ceesay, Executive Secretary GCCPC, said the aims of the training is to promote competition in all sectors of the economy by prohibiting collusive agreements and bid rigging, investigating and controlling other type of restrictive agreements, monopoly and merger situation.

  • GM: Govt Lauded for Prioritising IT

    Delegates at the ongoing 13th Africa Network Operators' Group (AfNOG) and the 16th African Regional Internet Registry (AfriNIC), currently underway at the Kairaba Beach Hotel, have lauded the Gambian leader for prioritising Information Technology in his ongoing development agenda.

    Speaking at a press conference, Professor Muhammedou Kah, the vice chancellor of the University of The Gambia (UTG) said: "His Excellency Sheikh Professor Dr. Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, Chancellor of the University of The Gambia gives priority to science technology innovation specifically ICT."

  • GM: Govt Will Ensure Nici Implemented As Planned - PS Camara

    The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, and Communication Infrastructure, MOICI, Lamin Camara, has said the government would ensure that ICT plans are implemented as designed to the satisfaction of the Gambian people and development partners.

    PS Camara made this statement yesterday at a consultative and validation workshop on phase II implementation plans in the National Information and Communications Infrastructure policy (NICI), held at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

  • GM: ICT Officials Call for MOICI Support

    ICT officials on Tuesday discussed the way forward on how best the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure (MOICI), as the parent body of ICT in The Gambia, could support ICT officials to be a part of its in-house ICT team.

    The call was made at a one-day maiden Gambia-Government ICT retreat held at the Gambia Hotel and Hospitality Institute in Kanifing by MOICI.

  • GM: Media laws will be reviewed, says Barrow

    President Adama Barrow has said the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure will be given support to sustain its local area networks.

    This, he said, would make it possible for the government to maintain the regional community information centres and provide them with the necessary ICT services.

    The e-government data centre would create better coordination and cooperation between government institutions, he added.

  • GM: MOICI engages regional authorities on formulation of digital roadmap

    Ministry of Information Communication and Infrastructure in partnership with Lasting Solutions Tech Company held workshop with stakeholders on 2020 -2024 ICT4D plan that aimed to engage and undertake consultations with key stakeholders to support the policy and strategy plan development process, for broadband, cyber security, Digital Economy funding mechanism. The synergy was held in Kerewan north bank region.

  • GM: Moici Validates Report On National ICT Agency

    The Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure (MoICI) yesterday validated a report for the establishment of a National ICT Agency of The Gambia. The validation workshop took place at the Ocean Bay Hotel.

    Presiding at the event was the permanent secretary at MoICI, Lamin Camara, who said MoICI through the support of the UNDP country office engaged a consultant to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of a National ICT Agency.
