  • UK: Road toll debate begins

    Transport secretary Alistair Darling has floated the idea of universal road tolling to manage traffic congestion

    Darling said he would make a speech on the issue in Parliament on the week beginning 6 June 2005.

    It would involve abolishing road tax and slashing fuel duties, while charging drivers between 2p to £1.30 per mile depending on where and when they drive. Their journeys would be monitored through satellite tracking technology.

  • USA: California: San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge to Study Cashless Toll System

    With hopes of closing a projected $132 million deficit and decreasing congestion, the operator of San Francisco's world-famous Golden Gate Bridge is considering moving toward a cashless toll system.

    The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District on Friday, April 9, approved the study of a plan to have all tolls electronically collected by 2013. If approved, the bejeweled landmark would be the first California bridge with unmanned, electronic-only tolling booths, according to John Goodwin, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Bay Area (Calif.) Toll Authority.

  • VERPATZTER START: Lkw-Maut wird verschoben

    Der Termin für den Start des Mautsystems auf deutschen Autobahnen ist wegen technischer Probleme geplatzt. Die Gebühr werde erst ab Anfang November von den Spediteuren kassiert, erklärten das Betreiberkonsortium und Bundesverkehrsminister Manfred Stolpe (SPD) am Donnerstag.

  • Verspätete digitale LKW-Maut kostet den Bund über 400 Millionen Euro

    Durch die zweimonatige Verspätung der Erhebung der Lkw-Maut drohen dem Bund Einnahmeverluste von über 400 Millionen Euro. Wie das Nachrichtenmagazin 'Focus' in seiner heutigen Ausgabe berichtet, muss der Bund wegen der Erhebung erst ab dem 2. November auf rund 360 Millionen Euro an Mauteinnahmen verzichten. Zudem verliert die Staatskasse zusätzliche 66 Millionen Euro, da die bisher gültige Lkw-Vignette für Ende August gekündigt wurde und deren Gültigkeit bis November nicht mehr verlängert werden kann.
