Smart City project’s special purpose vehicle — Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) — has come up with an innovative concept to install smart kiosks.

Denied permission by the police department to set these up at police stations, (NSSCDCL) will now install the kiosks at 40 smart bus stops being developed across the city.

However, the SPV— jointly owned by the state government and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) — has reduced the number of kiosks from 200 to 65 under chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ ambitious Rs520 crore Smart and Safe City project.

CEO of SPV Ramnath Sonawane has finalized the model of the kiosks. These will be installed in one of the two corners of bus stops in a cabin-shaped structure. Only touch screen and keypad will be accessible for safety purpose.

Under the project, the SPV is developing 158 Smart bus stops, of which 40 will be selected for these Kiosks considering the footfall of commuters and residents.

On June 25, TOI reported about the police department declining permission for installation of Smart kiosks at its 30 police stations and offices.

When the project was announced two years ago, the plan was to set up 200 Smart kiosks. The number of kiosks was brought down to 100. Again, the number has been reduced.

One of the officials from the SPV told TOI that people are already using smartphones on a large scale and the trend will rise with every passing year. “Hence, the number of Smart kiosks was required to be reduced. We can increase it if we get a good response,” he said.

As per the SPV’s data, 25 of the 65 Smart kiosks have been installed at the offices of NMC and other government departments.

It has been observed that the kiosks installed at places mentioned about were not getting response. Many felt that the kiosks should be installed in residential locations that are situated far away from the offices of NMC and other government departments.

The people coming to these places will not prefer to use kiosks with manual facility already available.

The project has got delayed to a great extent. The project comprising CCTV surveillance, WiFi, smart streetlighting, solid waste management, parking etc was supposed to be completed by October 20, 2017.
