Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will inaugurate smart city projects to the tune of Rs 168.85 crore and other schemes at a government function to be held in the city on Thursday (December 13).

Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC) commissioner R Sadheesh, along with Salem MP V Panneerselvam, MLAs G Venkatachalam and A B Sakthivel and other officials, inspected the event venue on Saturday. He said the smart city projects would focus on both area-based and pan city development.

Under the project, Salem old bus stand and VOC flower market area, which is spread across 690 acres, would be taken up for area-based development, with a thrust on traffic management, water management and underground drainage system, he said.

Pointing out that projects to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore would be implemented under the smart city project, the corporation commissioner said Rs 92.13 crore was set aside for reconstruction of Salem old bus stand, Rs 165 crore for renovation of Periyar Market, Bose Maidan and Nehru Auditorium, Rs 81 crore for water management project, Rs 47 crore for laying roads, Rs 114 crore for underground drainage work and Rs 30 crore for a rail over-bridge at Ponnammapet area.

“Of these, the chief minister will inaugurate projects to the tune of Rs 168.85 crore, including reconstruction of old bus stand, work on side-walls of Tirumanimutharu river pathways, multi-storied car parking and bio-fertilizer production centre, in the first phase,” Sadheesh said and added that the CM would also launch Rs 30 crore worth SMC works on Thursday.
