Notwithstanding criticism for the slow pace at which several ‘Smart City’ projects in the twin cities are being implemented, two initiatives – one in the health sector and the other in the field of education – have been recognised by the Union ministry of urban development.
Officials of the Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Ltd (HDSCL) confirmed that they had been officially intimated from the coordinator of the award programme. The Hubballi Lamington School, where HDSCL undertook initiatives leveraging technology for learning, will compete with Jabalpur Smart City Ltd and Lovely Professional University in education, Chintaguppi Hospital in Hubballi is vying with the Kochin Smart City Ltd in the domain of health.
HDSCL officials will head to New Delhi in January to make a presentation on both the projects, following which the winner will be announced. The ‘Smart City-Empowering India Awards’ is a ceremony being held to acknowledge the efforts of both public and private bodies for their successful execution of pioneering initiatives as part of the Government of India’s vision to develop 98 smart cities across the country. The awards are presented to those agencies for planning and successfully executing projects aimed at making sustainable development programmes integral part of urban life.
HDSCL special officer SH Naregal was understandably proud at the recognition for the agency’s efforts.
Innovation, the extent to which stakeholders have been involved in the initiatives, citizen outreach, sustainability, portability, impact and impact assessment are some of the criteria used to assess the performance of the projects.
