The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday came out with a standard operating procedure (SOP) to provide clean and green environment to the smart city residents by ensuring zero grass, plastic and soil (GPS) on roads.

The SOP, BMC officials said will help implement the zero GPS on campaign mode. According to the BMC, unnecessary weeds and bushes, soil (dust and remnants of construction and demolition waste) and plastic waste should not be found on the roads as they lend an ugly look to the city and pollute the environment.

“The SOP has been made to sensitise the sanitation workforce. It is like giving them implementation rules so that it becomes easy for them to go ahead with mission ‘zero GPS’. A survey will be conducted for identification of grass and bush patches by a ward-level team. Survey information will be furnished in a format. The survey teams will also identify unauthorised flex boards and banners pasted. As far as soil is concerned, the team will identify filthy patches and later the sanitary staff will intervene to clear the patches,” said BMC commissioner Vijay Kulange.

He added that the dedicated construction and demolition (C&D) waste enforcement squad will coordinate with sanitary inspector concerned to clear the waste.

The BMCs SOP also emphasises on removing all posters, stickers and banners pasted on trees and lamp posts.
