In what may come as a big relief for Nagpurians who find it difficult to locate a public toilet to answer nature’s call, the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) has started setting up 100 e-toilets (50 each for men and women) in the city. The city currently has 80 public toilets, including 34 community toilets.
A brainchild of general manager NSSCDCL (e-governance) Sheel Ghule, the smart toilets for men will be blue in colour, while the colour code for women’s toilets will be pink. “These e-toilets, which cost `8 lakh each, will be put into operation within a week,” Ghule said.
These e-toilets, with their unique design, compact size, being less water intensive and relatively maintenancefree than regular toilets, will be a boon for cities like Nagpur where citizens decry lack of public toilets, especially in commercial areas. The smart toilets will be fully automated pay and use facility.
The door will open after users insert any coin and the sensors will activate the flush before and after use. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been facing a big challenge to maintain existing 65 public toilets, while Rotary Club of Nagpur, which has installed 15 toilets, has been maintaining them through CRS funds.
About maintenance of the newly procured e-toilets, Ghule said that the firm entrusted to manufacture and install them will also maintain them free of cost for a year. “Also, NSSCDCL has signed an agreement for maintaining them for four more years. Rs 4,500 per toilet per month will be paid to the operator,” Ghule said.
A dashboard will also be set up at the Smart City office on the seventh floor of NMC’s administrative building from where the operations of the toilets can be monitored.
