An official extension to the Smart City Mission by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs till June 2024 has given a new lifeline to various projects in Ludhiana which are still under execution or yet to take off.

The civic officials have been given instructions to complete the projects in given set of time at any cost. No new project is to be added in the list of the already locked projects.

As of now, 17 projects are under execution while five projects are yet to start.

One of the most important works is ROB/RUB project at Pakhowal road near railway crossing, which has pending for a long time. Officials are hopeful it will see completion this year only. Interestingly, projects like Malhar Road beautification and Sarabha Nagar uplifting are yet to see completion as work related to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited is still pending. These projects were started in the initial days of Smart City Mission.

One of the senior officials claimed that they were trying to wind up the projects as soon as possible and some of them will be completed by June this year. Now when the mission has been extended till next year, they will definitely get more time, he said, adding that the work has been distributed among various branches of the civic body to meet the deadline.

Meanwhile, city residents were critical of most of the projects under the Smart City Mission, saying these could not bring desired results as planned. Manish Gupta from Civil Lines said, “Not even a single project taken under Ludhiana Smart City Mission can be considered beneficial for the city.”
