A prestigious annual e-governance awards scheme, named after the country’s ruler, is being opened to the private sector for the first time this year, it was announced here on Saturday.

The ‘Sultan Qaboos Awards for Excellence in e-governance’, organised by the Information Technology Authority (ITA), was until now restricted to government organisations.

“This year’s award will include a new target segment, ‘Private Sector’, alongside the existing government sector — We anticipate an exciting year ahead, as the spirit of competition is openly embraced among all participating entities to provide innovative projects and eServices of high quality,” an ITA spokesperson said.

The award seeks to promote quality in the field of eGovernment services by honoring digital projects that deliver exceptional innovation and achievement in the field of information technology.

“For the first time, the Sultan Qaboos Award for Excellence in eGovernment will now offer a chance for companies owned by government, as well as companies in the private sector, to participate in the competition and vie for a coveted award,” Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, ITA’s Chief Executive Officer, said.

Opening the award to a new target segment, he explained, would “enable such institutions to actively contribute to strengthening the efforts to create a developed digital environment in the sultanate, by providing electronic services to different segments of society”.

For the new segment added for this year, the ‘Private Sector’, two new dedicated categories have been created — Best Public eService and Best Public Mobile Service.

Categories for government sector will remain the same — Best eContent, Best eServices, Best eProject, Best eEconomy, and eReadiness. There are five sub-categories under eService: G2G, G2E, G2B, G2C and Mobile Services. Under the eProject category are two sub-categories — Individual and Collaborative.

Formal registration for this year’s award, which will be officially launched on Monday, will soon be announced.
