Saudi Arabia wants to take its “smart city” project to another level, because after the announcement of the creation of a smart city in 2017 with an estimated investment of $ 500,000, ‘Neom’ would become the “spearhead” of the technology worldwide, and with a view to reaching that goal, the country has announced an alliance with the startup Volocopter to implement the first customized transport service with eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft).
The agreement was concluded and signed between Nadhmi Al-Nasr, executive director of the NEOM project, and Christian Bauer, responsible for commercial affairs at Volocopter. This first agreement contemplates the design, implementation and operation of an air taxi service that “will be fully integrated with the general multimodal public transport system and zero emissions in Neom,” they explain in a statement.
While this system is being implemented, NEOM has already been able to order 15 eVTOLs from the company with the aim of “starting initial flight operations”, which are expected to begin within two or three years. Among the 15 vehicles acquired, ten will belong to ‘VoloCity’, a vehicle model designed for passengers, while the remaining will be used for logistics tasks.
Within the framework of these innovations, Volocopter had the opportunity to prove its worth, since just a month ago it published a video in which the eVTOL X2 model is seen reaching a height of 50 meters and traveling 3 kilometers at a speed of about 45 km/h.
A city with “with zero cars, zero streets and zero carbon emissions”
In order to reach 2030 without depending on oil (known as the Saudi Vision 2030 plan), Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced earlier this year the creation of an “eco-city” that will be built along the Red Sea coast called “La Línea”, a project that seeks to become a city free of carbon dioxide emissions and that works only through renewable energies, thus taking the title of the “first sustainable city in the world”.
The “pedestrian” city is designed to house one million inhabitants and have a length of 170 kilometers and it is expected that this city will generate around 380,000 jobs and according to a statement by the NEOM company, it is expected that by 2030 it will contribute with 48,000 million dollars to the GDP of Saudi Arabia.
One of the first projects that they seek to materialize is OXAGON, the world’s first floating industrial district, which will have ports and automated supply chains, in addition to opening the door to companies that want to bring the most advanced technological advances in the world, It is therefore that this first project seeks to become the axis of commerce and business of this project.
“OXAGON will help redefine the global approach to industrial development in the future, protecting the environment while creating jobs and growth for NEOM. It will contribute to Saudi Arabia’s regional trade and support the creation of a new focal point for global trade flows. This new city, built around new innovative industries, has begun its development and we look forward to the rapid expansion of the city, ” explained the crown prince, who is chairman of the board of directors of NEOM Company.
