Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has hailed Estonia’s experience in e-government building as a good lesson for Vietnam, while expressing his wish to cooperate with the European country in the field.

Addressing a reception for visiting Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser in Hanoi on September 14, PM Phuc highly appreciated Estonia’s e-government model, stating that Vietnam welcomes Estonian experts who could support the process of building its own e-government.

The leader applauded the effective coordination between the two countries at multilateral forums, calling on Estonia to facilitate the European Union’s signing of its free trade agreement (FTA) with Vietnam.

Bilateral trade revenues remain modest, he said, voicing his hopes that after the visit, Estonia would review and strengthen measures to accelerate two-way trade turnover and open up new avenues of cooperation between the two sides.

Estonian FM Sven Mikser said he hoped that his visit would create a new impetus for the enhancement of bilateral ties as the potential for cooperation remains huge, especially in e-government building and e-governance.

Such digital technology will help the Vietnamese government speed up the building of an e-government, strengthen transparency, and save on the budget, he said, affirming that Estonia is willing to share its experience in the field.

Emphasising Estonia’s support of the free trade trend, the minister pledged Estonia’s efforts to encourage the EU to accelerate the signing of its FTA with Vietnam, adding that Estonia will be one of the first countries to ratify the document.

Both the host and the guest agreed that all countries need to respect international law and United Nations conventions.

Regarding the East Sea issue, PM Phuc emphasised Vietnam’s consistent stance of ensuring peace, stability, and maritime and aviation freedom, as well as its compliance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On the same day, Estonian FM Sven Mikser held talks with Deputy PM and FM Pham Binh Minh, during which the two sides agreed to strengthen the exchange of all-level delegations; maintain political consultation and coordination between the two foreign ministries; and continue completing the legal framework to boost bilateral cooperation across all spheres, especially economics, trade, and investment.

They reached consensus on creating favourable conditions for the exports activities between the two countries; expanding cooperation in the potential areas of education-training, agriculture, culture-tourism, and security-defence; and maintaining close coordination at multilateral institutions, including the United Nations, the Asia-Europe Meeting, and other multilateral forums to which Vietnam and Estonia are signatories.

The two officials also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concerns, highlighting the significance of peace, stability, security, and maritime safety and freedom.

The Estonian side affirmed support for the viewpoints of Vietnam and ASEAN in peacefully resolving disputes in the East Sea on the basis of respecting international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Estonian FM Sven Mikser emphasised that Estonia supports Vietnam’s strengthening all-around cooperation with the EU, including the prompt signing and ratification of the Vietnam-EU FTA.
