Msheireb Properties, Qatar''s leading sustainable properties developer and the Qatar University (QU) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in the area of smart cities.

Mohammed Essa Al Boainain, Acting Chief Officer for Design and Delivery at Msheireb Properties and Prof Mariam Ali Al Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Office at QU signed the agreement, which will allow mutual exchange of information, researches, and expertise between both parties. Dr Abdelaziz Bouras, Pre-Awards Manager at QU and Otman Aghmou, Senior Manager for ICT Commercial at Msheireb Properties were also present at the signing ceremony which was held at the Msheireb Downtown Doha.

Addressing a press conference, Boainain said the new partnership will allow the participation of students in utilising their skills to develop new solutions for smart cities. The agreement will also act as a basis for a collaboration framework on research methods and exchange of experience in the area of smart cities. Both parties will exchange related information through various platforms including newsletter, journals, studies, statistics and other data that will assist in the delivery of quality projects. The cooperation also comprises any other possible respective fields that are of mutual interest to both parties, in addition to conducting mutual researches and studies and holding conferences, meetings, and trainings.

In a statement, Ali Al Kuwari, Acting CEO of Msheireb Properties, said: ''Msheireb Properties always endeavors to build partnerships with local organisations to share its expertise in many fields. As the smartest and most sustainable fully-built city district in the world, we are glad to formalise this agreement with Qatar University to provide students with detailed information and practical experience in the area of smart cities. Msheireb Downtown Doha is now a case study for local and international organisations as the first and largest smart and sustainable downtown regeneration project, which changes the way people think about urban living and leverage from the smart technology on our daily life. It also enhances the image of Qatar across the world as a leading country in smart and new urban building.

Also speaking during the event, Al Maadeed said that QU supports different research grants in collaboration with different stakeholders in Qatar. This allows the university''s students to work with different stakeholders to find solutions for the country''s economic and social development.

''This agreement establishes the societal role of the Qatar University and raises the level of exchanging experiences and skills, especially in the field of smart cities with Msheireb Properties. Qatar University is proud to be a major contributor to applied research projects and providing results that are in line with meeting the needs of society and the industrial sector. It also highlights the commitment of Qatar University to provide research based on addressing contemporary challenges in the State of Qatar, by developing effective and sustainable solutions, Al Maadeed added.

According to Bouras, as part of its commitment in training the students on how to develop sustainable solutions as well as to help them better understand smart cities, the QU is currently looking at how it can embed smart city solutions, and other smart city processes, regulations, and standards in the university''s curriculum.

In a statement, Msheireb Properties added that it is exchanging its experience in smart and sustainable development by building partnerships with local and international entities and to enhance the mission of changing the way people think about urban living. The leading Qatari developer also aims to improve people''s overall quality of life, through innovations that encourage social interaction, respect for culture, and greater care for the environment. This agreement is one of many partnerships that Msheireb Properties is building to share its experience in the field of smart cities.
