Tracking the movements of equipment, people, and even automobiles in a smart city can produce useful information that improves parking availability, garbage collection routes, and transportation system performance.

Smart cities automate operations like traffic, energy use, and trash management by using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in metropolitan areas to gather data. Smart cities achieve this by increasing the effectiveness of urban services, cutting costs, and delivering a greater level of living.

The core building blocks of a smart city are various IoT technologies and the creative applications that come from them. IoT technologies are being used more and more by smart cities to gather data, produce insights, and manage resources, services, and assets more effectively. Additionally, this transition is being sped up by the convergence of wired and wireless networks' higher data rates and capacities and new IoT applications.

A smart city can include a variety of characteristics, such as intelligent transportation, intelligent buildings, smart energy grids, and smart meters, as well as intelligent governance, smart healthcare, and smart public safety.

A smart city is not a single entity. Instead, it consists of various innovative solutions to raise the city's standard of living. Partnerships between the public and private sectors are typically used to create smart cities. Smart cities use several enabling technologies to offer their residents sophisticated services. These include Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, big data analytics, edge computing, local data centers, 5G networks, cloud computing, AI and ML, blockchain, and robotics.

The network of tangible items, such as appliances, cars, and buildings, equipped with sensors, software, and connectivity so they can gather and exchange data is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). These systems and connected equipment may communicate with one another, which enables seamless operation and data sharing. IoT and the smart city are being utilized to effectively address the growing resource demands of so many citizens who live, work, commute, and interact with one another. For instance, IoT and smart city initiatives are being used to enhance traffic control, energy usage, public safety, healthcare, and other areas.

Every smart city globally is supported technologically by IoT, which gives them the information, connectivity, and tools necessary to enhance urban services, maximize resources, and cut costs. IoT can deliver real-time data and insights on municipal operations and infrastructure by integrating numerous devices, systems, and people.

There are several clear obstacles to fully achieving the idea of a smart city, with security now being the main one. To this end, the connectivity of IoT devices opens up fresh points of vulnerability for cyberattacks, data breaches, and illegal access. The use of IoT devices and networks forms the basis of smart cities. Smart cities are functional and effective due to software solutions, user interfaces, and communication networks.
