Digital twins and the future of Singapore

With its ability to build an exact digital replica of anything from a small motor vehicle to entire cities, digital twins comprise one of the most promising tech developments of this decade. Singapore is at the vanguard of this leap as it holds the distinction of being the first country with its own virtual replica that is accurate down to individual buildings' rooftops, facades, and windows. With such detail, urban planners can do things that are approaching the realm of science fiction. Designers can simulate every metre of a new railway or bus lane, along with its impact on streets, households, and even at the individual level.

Digital twins also hold immense potential for high-value sectors such as manufacturing, which contributes a staggering 20% to Singapore's GDP.

Virgin Media O2 successfully trials smart poles to boost UK coverage

Virgin Media O2 has successfully trialled an innovative new way of improving and expanding mobile services by bringing together its fixed network infrastructure with new smart poles, which could help to boost mobile coverage in local areas across the UK.The innovation trial, delivered in collaboration with shareholder Liberty Global, has seen smart poles installed beside the operator’s existing national fibre network cabinets. The poles, which are much smaller than traditional mobile phone masts and do not require planning permission, can be safely installed in less than a day and house small cell technology which can boost mobile coverage in busy areas.

In a UK first, the electricity is supplied by Virgin Media’s fibre network rather than a traditional power supply through innovative ‘digital electricity’ technology, which transmits power from on-street cabinets in the local area along fibre optic cables. The same fixed fibre network is also used to carry data to and from the mobile cells and the internet.

    The Era of Smart Cities

The term “smart city” refers to the use of technology and data-driven solutions to enhance residents’ quality of life, improve efficiency and address various issues (like traffic congestion, pollution, and public safety). The phenomenon is on the rise worldwide, with many local governments adopting smart technologies.

One of the most important infrastructures for a smart city is a robust and effective Wi-Fi network. One such example is Hertfordshire in the UK, which recently upgraded its Wi-Fi infrastructure in over 300 government offices and community hubs. According to Innovation News Network, having a secure network with robust AI capabilities helped Hertfordshire County Council improve connectivity and benefit the community by encouraging residents to use public spaces. Other benefits include a supported hybrid working style and the minimization of roadblocks. Furthermore, if the Hertfordshire County Council wants to integrate other smart technologies, it will already have the foundational infrastructure.

Breaking down the silos to create efficient smart cities

The number of people expected to be living in cities is set to double by 2050 to some 6.4 billion urban dwellers. To cope with this population increase, and to adjust to the new needs of larger cosmopolitan environments, cities will require new and innovative ways of managing their assets and resources.

This is addressed by various smart city initiatives, where clever ways of connecting technologies, data and stakeholders, result in completely new fashions to manage e.g. traffic, street lighting, parking, waste collection or public safety. But for a city to become truly smart, it also needs to break the often-existing silos between different city departments, as well as the silos between public and private entities.

What is a smart city? How many such cities have been built in India so far?

Even the government does not have the answer to the question of: what is a smart city. In June 2015, a ‘Mission Statement and Guidelines’ were issued for this mission. In this document, it is said that there is no universal definition of ‘smart city’. According to the document, “The definition of a smart city is different for every person. So its meaning changes from city to city.”

However, the very next paragraph talks about building ‘developmental’ infrastructure for cities and providing excellent services. According to the document, the entire urban eco-system should be developed in such a way that it is in line with parameters of institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. In a sense, push for holistic development.

How Will AI Shape Our Future Cities?

From Zurich to Boston and Shanghai, more and more places are using “digital twins” to create a virtual version of the city to plan the urban experiences of tomorrow. But a lack of data means there’s still a gap between our visions and reality, which Swiss researchers are working on closing.

For city planners, a bird’s-eye view of a map showing buildings and streets is no longer enough. They need to simulate changes to bus routes or traffic light timings before implementation to know how they might affect the population. Now, they can do so with digital twins – often referred to as a “mirror world” – which allows them to simulate scenarios more safely and cost-effectively through a three-dimensional virtual replica.

Fifty-six cities completed more than 80% of the work in the same time frame. However, in 14 cities, the progress was 50% and below. Port Blair, Saharanpur, Puducherry, Itanagar, Silvassa, Shillong, Atal Nagar, and Gangtok had completed between 16% and 39% of the assigned projects till then, the standing committee on housing and urban affairs stated.

IN: Punjab: Ludhiana: Survey to install UID number plates moving at snail’s pace

After the project to install the unique identification (UID) number plates on all residential and commercial properties finally kicked off again recently, now the ongoing survey of properties is moving at snail’s pace.

The officials blamed poor support from public for the slow pace. They said the residents refuse to give information to the private contractor’s team. The officials claimed that people don’t support the survey team because they are afraid of imposition of taxes. The installation of UID number plates was started from Dhandhari and adjoining areas of Block 29 where most of the migrant population resides. They said they feel that after the UID plates are installed they will be on the MC’s radar and will have to pay water supply and other dues. The company which is conducting the survey and taking up the installation work had started installing the number plates outside properties from Nov 4, 2023 but the work was stopped in between due to opposition. Then after convincing the public, the work was initiated again on Nov 6, 2023.

BD: Dream of a Smart City 2.0

Smart City 2.0 represents the next phase in the evolution of urban development, characterized by integrating advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and overall quality of life within a city. Building upon the foundations of the initial smart city concept, version 2.0 places a stronger emphasis on innovation, data-driven decision-making, and community engagement.

This evolution involves the seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and sustainable practices, to create urban environments that are not only technologically advanced but also inclusive, environmentally conscious, and economically vibrant.

The traffic police, which has taken over the control of the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) set up under the Smart City project, has issued as many as 563 postal challans in the past two months here.

The traffic violations have been captured in the CCTV cameras installed under the project. To date, the police have been issuing challans manually and after intercepting the offenders on roads.

"Rajesh Duggal, DCP (Traffic): Cameras come in handy

It’s the first time that CCTV cameras have been used to detect the traffic rules violations. The facility is not only meant to regulate traffic, but will also be helpful in keeping a tab on crime and related activities"

---

Revealing that as many as 700 cameras have already been installed at 71 intersections under the project, a spokesperson of Faridabad Smart City Limited (FSCL) said these had come in handy for the traffic police in detecting violations and issuing postal challans. He said these cameras were part of the Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) system installed at various points. Theses cameras are monitored through the ICCC in Sector 20.

“The RLVD system captures the vehicles violating red lights with the images of number plates and generates an alert, which is passed on to traffic police control room,” he said, adding that a total of 1,600 cameras were proposed to be installed in the next six months. The traffic police issue challan after identifying the vehicle registration number online for such violations, it is added.

DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Duggal held a meeting with the officials of the ICCC here on Tuesday. Challans are being sent to the offenders through the postal system for red light jumping, no seat belt, wrong side driving and no helmet violations, etc.
